The Ghost Mountain Expedition Project is now in preparation to fly over solar power equipment to upgrade the rural clinic with electricity and network coverage in Dorobisoro village, Mt Obree in Central Province.
PNG Tribal Foundation, in partnership with Central Governor Rufina Peter, announced the expansion of the expedition through the launch of the major upgrade to the health clinic this week.
The clinic was neglected for 17 years without medical supplies, health workers, electricity and running water since 2009.
The flight into the foot of the Mt Obree through Owen’s Stanley Range, historical site of the crash-landing plane by American soldiers in 1942, will also bring in medical supplies and two health workers.
Locals can now have access to medical services with proper clinic facilities installed.
GT Bustin, President of PNG Tribal Foundation, said the update of the clinic has commenced, led by expedition partner Peter Gamgee, author of In Search of the Flying Dutchmen, who travelled to Port Moresby and will be travelling to Doribosori village last Wednesday for the installation of a solar power system, establishment of a communications network and delivery of medical supplies.
“Funding for the upgrade was raised by Mr Gamgee’s community in Queensland, Australia and channelled through PNG Tribal Foundation Australia to support the project on ground”, Mr Bustin said.
“Mr Gamgee, who led the inaugural expedition in 2009, returns with a dual purpose of guiding trekkers and strengthening essential services in the remote village.”
This year’s Ghost Mountain Expedition is scheduled for October. The expected participants from the United States, with the U.S. Embassy anticipated to take part in the trail.
“We are grateful to Governor Rufina Peter for her continued support and look forward to welcoming a new group of trekkers this October,” Mr Bustin said.
The Ghost Mountain Expedition is one of the tourism products initiated by Tribal Foundation about introducing people from around the world to the beauty and culture of Papua New Guinea while delivering real services to the communities along the trail.
